Happy Leap Day reminders….

Happy Leap Day,
I’ve been accumulating some reminders that libraries have wanted me to send out and thought I’d post them on this extra day.  They’ll be repeated next February 29th.

1.  You know I’m going to start with Kent vs. Kent.
Kent Library Association in Kent is B-88 Kent Memorial Library in Suffield is A -183

2.  By Kent standards, these aren’t even close, but watch out for Stratford Library Association (A-182) vs. Stafford Library Association (A-176).  We won’t get into Stamford.

3.  And there is Hall Memorial Library in Ellington.  Please don’t confuse with Hall Memorial School in Willington.

4.  Staples.  Please don’t put staples on your AV packaging.  Our fingers are tender.
And you don’t have to over-tape either.  Just enough to secure the package.

5.  See those boxes at the bottom of the slip?  Please use them to indicate whether the item is an ILL request/return, system hold, etc.  This saves time for the receiving library’s staff.

Happy Leap Day.  Sharon

New OCLC Website

One company, one vision, one brand: Web site launch

On behalf of the OCLC Global Marketing team, I am proud to announce the next step in the rebranding of the organization with the launch of the new OCLC Web site which will go live next week. The new site is the result of a lot of hard work by many people across all offices and disciplines to design, code, write, edit, translate, localize, describe, organize and review the 16,000+ pages of information about OCLC in preparation for launch.

The consolidated Web presence brings together the external sites for every geographic region that OCLC serves, providing a single access point for the global and regional information about OCLC. For our users in Europe, this site succeeds www.oclcpica.org and an automatic redirect from this site has been created that will direct visitors to the global gateway where they can select their regional preferences.

There are three “levels” to the new Web site

    • A global gateway
    • A worldwide site at oclc.org
    • Regional sites representing geographic regions and languages. The new url for the U.S. (English) site is http://www.oclc.org/us/en/default.htm

A global gateway

    • Beginning on February 11th, visitors to oclc.org will arrive at a new global gateway where they can select their preferred regional site and language.
    • Their preference may be saved as the primary destination for the next time they visit. Language or geographic preferences can also be changed to enable visitors to access other regional sites as they wish.
    • A worldwide site

· Historically, the domain oclc.org was used for the Web site that serves the United States.  At launch, oclc.org will be the home of a worldwide OCLC site that will represent the breadth of products and services available across all regions

· The worldwide site will be in English, and will be the primary home for the Office of Programs and Research Web content.
It is also where we will direct anyone who is interested in OCLC, but not represented by a dedicated regional site for their country/language at this time.

Regional sites
· The primary goal of the new site development was to bring together and integrate all regional Web sites for OCLC, making them consistent in design and architecture, while allowing for appropriate localization and translation of content.

The regional sites available at launch from the global gateway will be:
· Asia Pacific (English)

1 Asia Pacific (Simplified Chinese)
2 Asia Pacific (Traditional Chinese)
3 Canada (English)
4 Canada (French)
5 France (French)
6 Germany (German)
7 Latin America and the Caribbean (English)
8 Latin America and the Caribbean (Spanish)
9 Latin America and the Caribbean (Portuguese)
10 Middle East (English)
11 Netherlands (Dutch)
12 UK and Ireland (English)
13 United States (English)

· The content at each regional site will be localized and translated for that location. Future content development and localization will be informed by a new International Editorial Committee with representatives from all the appropriate OCLC offices.

Next steps
Of course, as is the way of the Web, the work is never done, and the content will change continuously. To that end we have a number of initiatives already underway to enhance and improve the new site soon after launch:

    • Additional and ongoing localization and translation of content for the regional sites
    • Addition of more opportunities for social networking and the addition of user-contributed content
    • The creation of a new Careers area of the site
    • The enhancement of areas representing OCLC governance and management.

If you have questions about the new OCLC site, please contact Jenny Johnson at johnsone@oclc.org. We welcome your insights, comments and suggestions for continuing to enhance how OCLC communicates with libraries around the world.

Connecticut ILL Policy

Hello everyone,

FYI - I just updated the Connecticut ILL Policy. The latest version is available at:
http://ct.webjunction.org/do/DisplayContent?id=18596
From this page, you can download a pdf version sorted by library name or by town and you can download the entire Excel file that also contains a worksheet with the raw data. The pdf versions are better for printing, while the Excel is better if you wish to do any further sorting.

The latest version includes the ILL policies of 120 libraries in Connecticut - 10 libraries have submitted their policies since the last version in January.

This is an ongoing project and I invite and encourage every library in Connecticut to submit their ILL policy. Simply visit the WebJunction page above and follow the link that takes you to the survey. The policy will be updated on the first Friday of the month.

Regards,
Steve

CONTU Copyright tracking in reQuest ILL

Attn: Libraries using reQuest ILL

With Tuesday’s upgrade, Auto-Graphics has implemented a new CONTU Copyright-Compliance Tracking feature. This feature only applies to ‘Copy’ requests - it does not apply to requests for loans of books, videos, etc.

Here’s a very(!) brief summary of how this affects reQuest ILL:

1. The CCG and CCL options no longer appear in your ILL Particpant record, nor will you see them when you initiate a “Copy” request. The system will automatically figure out CCG and CCL based on the date of
the copy you are requesting.

2. On the “Copy” request form, the 4 digits for the ‘Year’ must be input into the request. This information is now mandatory because the system uses it to determine and track appropriate copyright compliance. If you
don’t know the year, you may enter two question marks (??) into the ‘Year’ field.

3. On the “Copy” request form, you may select the ‘Month/Season’ and ‘Day’ from drop-down menus. This information helps the system determine and track appropriate copyright compliance.

4. The system will  automatically add a ccg (complies to CONTU Guidelines) or ccl (complies with Copyright Law) to the “Copyright” field on the request so that the lending library sees the notification.

5. If you (as the borrowing library) initiate a request for a copy of an article which exceeds the CONTU Guidelines of five, you will receive a dialog box with the note:
“This photocopy request will exceed your library’s (calendar year)
guidelines for this title. Do you want to proceed?”
You may click “OK” and proceed with the request or you may click “Cancel” and close the request.

The Copyright tracking feature only works for newly created Copy requests, i.e. for those created now and going forward, so it’s in place for the calendar year 2008.

This feature includes reports to view the titles for filled requests that fall under CONTU guidelines. We are working on rolling the reports out; I’ll send information about accessing the reports soon.

If you’d like more information on this feature, I can send you a pdf from Auto-Graphics that spells everything out in detail. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

(On a personal note: I wish this feature had been available when I was working in an ILL office! I particularly like the way it works in the background: calculating dates, putting ccg or ccl on the request, notifying me when I reach the limit, etc. I think this is a nicely configured feature and believe it will streamline your Copy requesting.)

Regards,
Steve

Conn. ILL Policy available

The Connecticut ILL Policy is available at:
http://ct.webjunction.org/do/DisplayContent?id=18596
From this page, you can download a pdf version sorted by library name or by town, and you can download the entire Excel file that also contains a worksheet with the raw data.

At the very bottom of the documents, you will see that I totaled the responses to each category, so you can see how many libraries responded Yes, Reciprocal, or No to each of the categories.

I’d like to thank the staff members of the 87 libraries that have responded to the survey so far. This is an ongoing project and I invite and encourage every library in Connecticut to submit their ILL policy. Simply visit the WebJunction page above and follow the link that takes you to the survey. The policy will be updated on the first Friday of the month.

Regards,
Steve
